I’ve figured out what to do so far, but it’s always the next thing you come to where the man with the bucket of ice cold water is waiting – whoosh! in your face. That’s why you work with directors who know what to tell you to do. ~ Dame Judi Dench.
I
Twitter. Just got two fabulous pieces of advice about (post) drama School acting training from one of the West Ends most influentional and (imho) talented actors, Kevin Spacey. V. interesting, and useful, pov.
He said understanding how the business really works and to take advice from those who are already in the biz. V. useful. But how to find someone who knows from long experience and is prepared to share with a rooky?
The most thought-provoking was his advice to think in the “long-term”. I can see how this would the best perspective to have. I wonder how that can be achived. Is continued training the key?
Hmm, lots to think about and to do. Thanks Mr Spacey

In music, the punctuation is absolutely strict, the bars and rests are absolutely defined. But our punctuation cannot be quite strict, because we have to relate it to the audience. In other words we are continually changing the score. ~ Ralph Richardson.
Recorded my recent voice work and listened to myself for the first time in far too many years. It has been, erm, instructive and has given me many things to work on. Most notabe are:
* I sound like a 10 year old. How/why is my voice so high?!
* I felt like I was using far too much intonation/vocal colour but on playback there isn’t nearly enough. Parts I thought sounded emotional or vibrant barely register. This could be as I’m using my PCs inbuilt mic but it’s more likely the result of my own inadequacies.
* Lack of verve/energy. Clearly not focused and energetic enough. Quite easy to rectify. I think.
* Less underbreathing than I expected. Good thing.
* Needs more variation in pacing. Again what I think I’m doing and what is heard are different. Can afford to go more OTT.
* Have a strong ‘S’ sound. Not quite a lisp but close enough to need work as it’s distracting.
* Desperately need good vocal technique. Throat should not hurt after only 30 mins of work. Breathing. Posture. Etc. At least, hope it’s technique I need and it’s not caused by anything more problematic.
* Have heard worse V/Os on TV.
Conclusion: Not as bad as I was expecting, lots of constructive things to work on.
